Senator Mary Brown Boren currently serves as Oklahoma State Senator for District 16, which covers The University of Oklahoma and Norman in Cleveland County. She was first elected in November 2018 and reelected in 2022.

Mary grew up in Tipton, Oklahoma, and began developing a passion for education before receiving her bachelor's degree from Cameron University in Lawton.  Mary graduated with distinctions from the University of Oklahoma, College of Law in 1992.

Senator Boren celebrates over 30 years of marriage with her husband, Dr. Nathan Boren, a board-certified Family Physician. Together they have three children and are members of the First Christian Church of Norman.

Senator Boren's career and accomplishments are distinguished. She served as a Carl Albert Executive Fellow for the State Regents of Higher Education, and she was the Director of Instructional Materials while on the State Textbook Committee for all of Oklahoma’s universities and public schools.  She was later enlisted by Governor Walters, and then Governor Brad Henry to serve as a legal analyst for legislation.

Senator Boren worked in private practice beginning in 1996, representing clients in civil litigation, family law and child advocacy.  During this time frame, Mary became involved with
the Institute for Child Advocacy, Kids Count Leaders training and the American Bar Association’s Children and Law Committee. In 2009, Mary
became a certified school counselor and worked for Little Axe High School and Adams Elementary School.  In 2015, Mary worked as Program Coordinator for the Center for Children and Families, and in 2016 she accepted the role as the Estate and Legacy Attorney for The Salvation Army, before joining the Goodin Law Firm.

In 2019, Senator Boren was recognized with the Distinguished Service Award for Higher Education by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and the Council of College and University Presidents, for her commitment, advocacy and support of higher education.

Mary's lifetime of commitment to service and volunteering is lengthy, and she exemplifies the spirit of hard work and giving that we value in Oklahoma.
